Using Clothes From Social Fabric
The Social Fabric exhibition connects Cornell University’s textile resources to those from the former American Textile History Museum. The museum recently donated its archives and library to Cornell. With this acquisition, the university has enriched its textile resources and expanded its knowledge. Its mission is to share the stories of the people and the places that make the clothes and textiles we wear. The new show Social Fabric, presented by streetwear designer Kyle Ng, is a global exploration of menswear. The 12-episode series will follow Ng as he travels the world to discover how different types of apparel tell different stories. The first season will focus on denim jeans, sneakers, plaid, cowboy boots, fedoras, and religious clothing.

The Worn Archive exhibition features the material and biographical experience of clothing and its historical context. It includes 47 textile pattern books, including many acquired from the studio of designer Deryck Healey. Some notable books include a collection of sample fabric used for the London Underground in the 1940s and 50s and a Chinese swatch book. They transferred a selection of the books to the museum’s Special Collections in 2012, and the rest were sent to the Joshua Ellis Company, an atelier in Yorkshire.
